2010 Volkswagen Golf Variant

In the sixth generation of the world bestseller, Volkswagen Golf Variant is the fourth body version to be launched after the three- and five-door VW Golf and the latest VW Golf Plus. The Variant is one of the most successful models on the market, particularly in the company car market.

The extensive redesign of this Variant should ensure that the all-around talent further extends its position as a business estate car and as a first car for families as well. The base price of the new Volkswagen Golf Variant in Germany is € 18,500, which includes ESP, six airbags, daytime running lights, roof railing, electric windows all around, upshift indicator, electrically adjustable and heated outside mirrors, 1/3 to 2/3 split folding rear bench seat and backrest, central locking with RF remote, climate control, 16-inch wheels and up to 1,550 litres of cargo capacity.

The front end of the Volkswagen Golf Variant was completely redesigned. Its visual appearance follows today's Volkswagen "Design DNA". From now on, its appearance will be defined by clear horizontal lines and bold headlight styling. Key engines of the Golf three- and five-door models were also transferred to the Variant. In the interior, high-end instruments of the current Golf set the tone.


The front end of the 4.53 meter long and 1.78 meter wide Volkswagen Golf Variant was completely redesigned. Visually, it now follows the styling of the current Volkswagen "design DNA". Clear horizontal lines and bold styling of the headlights will now define its appearance. And so the bumper, radiator grille, engine bonnet and fenders and highlights were all transferred from the three- and five-door versions of the new Golf classic.

In contrast to the previous Volkswagen Golf Variant, the design is no longer characterised by a chrome radiator grille, rather by a black, horizontally styled grille and body-coloured bumpers. In its lower front section, the Variant also has an additional large air intake. Starting with the mid equipment version (Comfortline) chrome inserts are integrated in the radiator grille and lower air intake. In the case of the top Highline version, this also applies to the surrounds of the standard front fog lights with new static turning lights.

At the rear, the previous model's independent design has been upgraded in the new generation by modified taillights and bumpers whose lower area is also fully painted in body colour. From now on, TDI and TSI versions can also be recognised by their tailpipes, which are no longer covered by the bumper. In addition, Volkswagen developed a new range of wheels for the Volkswagen Golf Variant.

Perfection in details

The new Volkswagen Golf Variant also preserves the car body's excellent layout and high level of everyday utility. The development team focused on perfection in the details. Attaining the best possible acoustic properties on the new Golf was a top priority for Volkswagen. In this context, the body was equipped with new detailed solutions in a variety of areas. Highly effective acoustic damping is implemented in the front windscreen, which eliminates nearly all high-frequency noise in the three kHz range that is very typical in vehicles with diesel engines.

In addition, many secondary noises have been eliminated or reduced right at their source. In particular, this was achieved in all belt drives, the turbocharger and charge air distribution channels as well as in the heating and cooling blower. Quiet rolling tires and new engine bearings round out the noise reduction program. Independent of body-related modifications, noise comfort has been further improved by a new generation of turbo-diesels with common rail injection, as well as integration of TSI petrol engines that are known for their quiet operation.


The new VW Golf Variant is being offered with a seamless package of safety features as standard equipment. On the passive side, there is a further perfected safety body (including optimised pedestrian protection), six airbags and a patented head restraint system for driver and front passenger.

Front, side and head airbags

The driver and front passenger airbags (known as front airbags) and safety belt system together form a precisely coordinated front restraint system on the new Volkswagen Golf Variant. As before, the side airbags are still integrated in the backrests of the front seats. They protect the chest, abdomen and pelvis and have been optimally tuned to the car's more rigid side structure. Integrating the side airbags in the backrests assures optimal airbag positioning in relation to the driver and front passenger. Furthermore, Volkswagen is introducing standard head airbags that help to prevent high biomechanical loads to the head. Specifically, these airbags cover an area along the side windows extending from the A pillar to the C pillar and from the roofliner to the door sill. This results in maximum protection at all seating positions regardless of body size. That is because protection over a large area prevents the head and extremities from swinging out and prevents objects from penetrating into the car's interior. Since the head airbags remain inflated for a long time, they even retain much of their effectiveness in secondary collisions such as in the case of a rollover accident.

WOKS - head restraints help protect against whiplash

Accident-related hyperextensions of the cervical spine are known internationally as "whiplash syndrome". Volkswagen counteracts these types of injuries by coordinating movements of the head and upper body into the seat backrests and head restraints as synchronously as possible in the event of a crash. This is called the "Whiplash Optimised Head Restraint System", or WOKS for short. The latest generation of WOKS is now being implemented as standard equipment on the Golf.

In an effort to reduce injury risk, excellent protection is realised by defined deceleration of the upper body in the seat backrest, coordinated deceleration of the head in the head restraint, and balanced movements of the head and upper body. Crucial parameters here are the special contours of the head restraints and backrests as well as the hardness of the foam material that is used. The contoured shape of the head restraints is being patented by Volkswagen. In related studies, WOKS has demonstrated excellent protective potential with biomechanical values that are substantially better than those of many other active systems.


In the transition from the third to fourth generation of the Volkswagen Golf Variant, another tremendous leap has been made in quality. The high quality of the materials that are used is especially evident in the interior. This high level of value is a common thread running through the redesigned interior, especially when it comes to the car's instruments. The look and feel of the materials, details such as brushed chrome accents and the round instruments and steering wheels taken directly from the VW Passat CC all leave the impression that one is actually sitting in a vehicle of the next higher market segment. And this is not just experienced in the two upgraded Golf equipment versions "Comfortline" and "Highline" but in the "Trendline" base version as well.

The interior ergonomics also reflect advanced development. All of the car's functional components are even easier to operate. These include controls for the climate control system (Climatronic) initially introduced on the Passat CC. Sometimes it is the smallest of details that make the greatest impression. Consider the leather seats: a new more robust leather is being used in the new Volkswagen Golf Variant. Its improved surface properties make dye transfer, such as from jeans, passé even with very light-coloured leather. Or consider the redesigned steering column length and height adjuster; the lever was relocated from the centre of the steering column to the left side, making it ergonomically easier to reach.


The instrument panel of the Volkswagen Golf Variant was completely redesigned. This has resulted in a clear, well-organised geometry offering uncompromising ease of operation and a high level of timeless elegance. On initial contact, one is immediately impressed by the luxurious soft materials of the upper cockpit area and door trim that complement the design of the instruments.

The instruments of the Volkswagen Golf Variant now match instrument styling in the classic Golf three- and five-door models. Prominently displayed are the two round instruments with brushed chrome bezels, which are standard in the base vehicle; the tachometer is on the left, and the speedometer on the right. Also designed as a round instrument is the engine temperature gauge; it is integrated in the lower part of the tachometer. Its counterpart is the fuel gauge integrated in the speedometer. Gauge scale markings are backlit in white (regardless of whether the headlights are on or off); while turn signal indicators are in red. Also designed in white now are the graphics of the multi-function display (MFD) - located between the tachometer and speedometer - which is always standard equipment. An upshift indicator was integrated in the MFD, which depends on the engine option.

Another redesigned component is the light switch. On the "Comfortline" and "Highline" equipment versions, the switch's handhold is in metal. Like the main instruments, air vents near the instrument cluster also have brushed chrome bezels. There is one vent at each end of the instrument panel for driver and passenger, and two in the centre console. In addition, a vent for the side windows is integrated in each of the A-pillar trim panels. Complementing the chrome bezels, the upper and lower sections of instruments are separated by dark silver accents ("Titan") on the "Trendline" base version. In the middle "Comfortline" equipment version the accents are glossy black ("Black Pyramid"), and in the top "Highline" version they are light "Brushed Chrome".

Centre console

All of the controls arranged on the centre console are readily and equally accessible to driver and front passenger. Right at the top is the hazard flasher switch, optimally located between the air vents. On the level below this, there is the audio or radio-navigation system. The third level of controls contains interfaces to the heating and ventilation or climate control system. Another set of switches is located directly in front of the gearshift lever for activating or deactivating systems such as ESP and "Park Assist".

If the Volkswagen Golf Variant is ordered with an automatic climate control system (Climatronic), a new set of controls is provided. There are two control knobs, one on the left and one on the right, for selecting temperatures in 1 degree increments separately for driver and passenger sides. They are also used to activate seat heating. Naturally, the temperature for the two sides can be controlled jointly too. The set temperature is displayed outside of the control knob, in its bezel, and if a RCD 310, RCD 510, RNS 310 or RNS 510 radio or radio-navigation system is installed, the temperature is also shown in that unit's display. The main operating modes of the Climatronic ("Auto", completely "Off", "Dual", "AC") and blower levels are set in the area between the two control knobs. Located in the upper area are controls for ventilation modes, rear window heating and recirculation functions.

Further down the centre console, at the height of the handbrake lever, are the familiar storage compartment and an AUX-IN port (standard with RCD 310 and higher) that can be used to connect devices such as an MP3 player. The optional MEDIA-IN port can also be integrated in the storage compartment of the equipment line dependent centre armrest. This USB port is used to interface to a wide variety of memory sources for the audio system. For example, an iPod - including its special control functions - can also be integrated in the system as a music source with a suitable cable.


Volkswagen is offering the new Volkswagen Golf Variant in four different seat configurations, depending on the equipment line. The "Trendline" base version already has excellent contoured seats in the "Roxy" fabric style. These seats can be ordered in "Titan Black" or "Latte Macchiato" colour. The comfort seats of the Volkswagen Golf Variant Comfortline are now designed to be even more ergonomic. The cross-stitched fabric of the seat and backrest surfaces creates a clear visual contrast to exterior surfaces. This fabric pattern is called "Scout / Merlin", and it too can be ordered in "Titan Black" or "Latte Macchiato" colour.

The sport seats of the Volkswagen Golf Variant Highline are especially refined. They are upholstered in Alcantara (centre seat panels) and fabric ("Dropmag" style). Colours of the "Highline" seats: "Titan Black" or "Corn Silk" plus "Titan Black". In addition, Volkswagen is offering a seat system on the Golf Variant Highline that is upholstered in high-end "Vienna" leather. The colours "Titan Black" and "Corn Silk" are also offered here.

The latest generation of the bestselling five-seater offers exceptionally spacious conditions. In front, the maximum interior height is 1,032 millimetres (seat in lowest position). The rear seating area offers a maximum interior height of 986 millimetres, depending on the version. Leg room in the so-called extended position of the driver's seat is 45 millimetres. Also contributing to the car's good comfort and ergonomic properties is the comfortable seat height of 274 millimetres in front and 321 millimetres in the rear. The interior width of the Volkswagen is 1,446 millimetres in front and 1,437 millimetres in the rear.

Cargo area

The new Volkswagen Golf Variant is a compact space wonder. When the cargo partition net is installed and cargo is loaded up to the height of the top of the rear bench seatback, the Variant provides up to 745 litres of load volume; up to the load sill at window height it is a maximum of 560 litres. When the rear bench seat is folded down and the interior space is fully utilised, up to 1,550 litres of cargo volume can be stowed in the VW Golf Variant (all data includes spare wheel recess).

When the rear bench is folded, the continuous flat cargo area of the new Volkswagen Golf Variant up to the driver's backrest measures 1.70 meters, and when the front passenger seat is folded down this results in a 2.72 meters long pass-through surface. Bins offer storage space under the cargo floor and in the side panelling. Even when the standard factory-installed asymmetrical split bench is not lowered, a respectable 1.07 meters of cargo length is still available. Maximum width: 1.29 meters. Interior width between wheel wells is 1.01 meter.

Operating the factory-installed asymmetrically split rear bench seat is exceptionally easy. Release buttons next to the outer head restraints disengage the backrests from their anchorages so that they can be folded forward. A clever detail is a red indicator, visible from the front seats too, that warns if one of the two rear backrests is not fully engaged when lifting the seatback up again. As a standard feature on the Volkswagen Golf Variant Comfortline and a special option on other equipment lines, the front passenger backrest can also be folded forward, resulting in a single continuous loading surface.

Interior variability is also enhanced by the centre armrest in the rear seating area, which is standard equipment starting at the Comfortline level. When folded down, it creates an especially large pass-through to the cargo area, making it easy to stow long and bulky sports equipment such as paddles or skis.

Load safety: Preventive practical solutions

To prevent cargo from shifting into the passenger area during a collision or hard braking, the Volkswagen Golf Variant can be equipped with a cargo partition net. Normally, it is installed behind the rear bench seat. However, when the rear backrest is folded forward, the net can be anchored near the front backrests.

Providing for additional cargo safety are four tie-down eyes located on the right and left side panels in the cargo area, and at the front of the cargo area. When they are not in use, they can be folded away without leaving any corners or edges protruding. Another extremely practical feature for securing individual objects in the cargo section is the variable cargo floor. A handle is used to set it in place, and it latches securely in the notches provided for it. Smaller thin objects will also fit in the storage bin beneath the variable cargo floor.

Just as practical: The special bag hooks that fold out from the side panelling of the cargo area. They are standard equipment and prevent shopping bags from spilling their contents into the cargo area while driving. The first aid kit and hazard triangle are at an easy-to-reach location behind a cover in the left side panel of the cargo area.

Panoramic sunroof creates a bright ambiance

As a special equipment option - and a standard feature on the Golf Variant Highline - Volkswagen is offering a newly designed panoramic sunroof. With a length of 1.36 meters and width of 0.87 metres, its transparent surface spans a large section of the interior, creating a pleasant, light-filled ambiance. The roof consists of two halves; the front section can be raised or fully opened. To preserve full interior height, the section that opens is driven out above the closed section of roof. An electrically-powered sunshade offers protection from intense sunlight.

Engines and transmissions

At the car's European market launch, Volkswagen will be offering the new Volkswagen Golf Variant with four petrol and two diesel engine options. Their power ranges from 59 kW / 80 PS to 118 kW / 160 PS. Four of the six engines are supercharged and/or turbocharged. As in the classic Golf, the latest generation of common rail turbo-diesels (TDI) will be used for the first time in the Volkswagen Golf Variant too. They replace the previously offered pump-nozzle direct injection engines and play a significant role in the new Volkswagen Golf Variant's pioneering acoustic properties.

The petrol and diesel engines across all power levels consume less fuel than similarly powered engines of the previous model. Fuel savings and related lower emissions are huge in some cases.


The range of petrol engines in the launch phase spans four versions with 59 kW / 80 PS, 75 kW / 102 PS, 90 kW / 122 PS and 118 kW / 160 PS. Starting at 90 kW / 122 PS, TSI engines with supercharger and/or turbocharger are used. Clearly, the petrol engines are pioneers in fuel efficiency too. The optimised 80-PS entry-level engine consumes just 6.4 litres Super per hundred kilometres (149 g/km CO2). Once again, the TSI engines are taking the stage as prime examples of efficiency: the new Golf 1.4 TSI with 122 PS consumes just 6.0 litres Super (139 g/km CO2). Even the new 160-PS top version of the 1.4 TSI attains a top value at 6.1 litres (DSG version).

1.4 with 59 kW / 80 PS

The entry into the world of VW Golf Variant engines is marked again by the 1.4-litre engine (1,390 cm3), which has proven itself a million times over and outputs 59 kW / 80 PS power at 5,000 rpm. The petrol engine attains its maximum torque of 132 Newton-meter at 3,800 rpm. A version of this economical bestselling engine with wide-ranging technical modifications is being used in the new Volkswagen Golf Variant; it shines with a combined fuel consumption of just 6.4 litres per hundred kilometres (149 g/km CO2).

With this engine, the Volkswagen Golf Variant attains a top speed of 173 km/h. Shifted by a five-speed gearbox, it takes 14.9 seconds for the four cylinder to accelerate the Variant to 100 km/h. The first service inspection - and this applies to all new Volkswagen Golf Variant versions - is not due until after three years or 60,000 kilometres. The 1.4-litre engine is exclusively available in conjunction with the Trendline equipment line.

1.6 with 75 kW / 102 PS

Like the 1.4 litre petrol engine, the modified 1.6 litre engine (1,595 cm3) with 75 kW / 102 PS (5,600 rpm) satisfies the strict Euro-5 emissions standard. The four-cylinder develops a maximum torque of 148 Newton-meters at 3,800 rpm. With this engine, the new Volkswagen Golf Variant handles the sprint to 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds; its top speed is 189 km/h. On average, the petrol engine consumes 7.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (168 g/km CO2). Like the 1.4, the Volkswagen Golf Variant 1.6 is also shifted by a five-speed transmission as standard equipment. The Volkswagen Golf Variant 1.6 is available in the Trendline and Comfortline equipment lines.

1.4 TSI with 90 kW / 122 PS

The turbocharged TSI with 90 kW / 122 PS is one of the most advanced petrol engines in the world. There is hardly another petrol engine that can match its impressive power curve with such fuel efficiency. In the new Volkswagen Golf Variant, the four-cylinder direct injection engine requires just 6.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (146 g/km CO2). A six-speed gearbox is standard with this engine. The Volkswagen Golf Variant 1.4 TSI with 122-PS is even more fuel efficient when shifted via the optional 7-speed DSG; this configuration yields a combined fuel consumption of 6.0 litres (139 g/km CO2).

The car's fuel efficiency contrasts with its excellent driving performance. The Volkswagen Golf Variant 1.4 TSI at this power level is moving at 100 km/h after just 9.9 seconds, shifted by a manual gearbox or DSG. Its top speed in both cases is 200 km/h. Like all engines of the new Volkswagen Golf Variant, this TSI also fulfils the Euro-5 standard.

This highly praised and award-winning engine develops its peak power of 122 PS at 5,000 rpm. The engine's maximum torque of 200 Newton-meters is available over a broad speed range extending from a low 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. Even at 1,250 rpm - barely above idling speed - the engine can output 80 percent of its maximum torque.

1.4 TSI with 118 kW / 160 PS

As the most powerful petrol engine in the new Volkswagen Golf Variant, Volkswagen is implementing a four cylinder that is both turbo- and supercharged and has a power of 118 kW / 160 PS (at 5,800 rpm). Of special interest here is the engine's specific power: the 1.4 litre engine attains 84.3 kW or 114.3 PS per litre displacement. Its maximum torque of 240 Newton-meter is available between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. Like the 122-PS TSI, this engine is also exceptionally fuel-efficient. The 160-PS TSI attains a top value in savings at 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 149 g/km CO2). When the 160-PS TSI is paired with 7-speed DSG, fuel consumption is even reduced to 6.1 litre (143 g/km CO2).

The driving performance data of the Volkswagen Golf Variant 1.4 TSI with 160 PS is also impressive: in both transmission versions the Volkswagen is moving at 100 km/h after just 8.4 seconds; its top speed is 220 km/h. The top model among the petrol engines can be ordered on the Comfortline and Highline equipment lines.


As in the classic Golf, Volkswagen is now converting all TDI engines over to 16-valve common rail engines with 1.6 and 2.0 litre displacement in the Variant version of the bestseller as well. Internationally, plans call for power levels of 66 kW / 90 PS, 77 KW / 105 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS. Right at the Variant's market launch, Volkswagen is offering the versions with 105 PS and 140 PS. Always aboard: a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Besides their economy and agility, the new TDI engines also distinguish themselves by their low-noise properties. Two balancing shafts on the 140-PS version put an end to undesirable vibrations too. In addition, a new engine bearing design ensures that the engines are better isolated from the car body. Volkswagen will be offering the 6-speed DSG as an option with both TDIs.

1.6 TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS

Technically, the 1,598 cm3 TDI sets the highest standard in its market segment. Via the common rail system, the diesel fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at a pressure of 1,600 bar. Special piezo actuators control the multiple injections and fuel quantities with maximum precision.

To reduce internal engine friction as much as possible, the crankshaft, valve and oil pump drives were optimised. A square stroke/bore ratio minimises friction losses at the cylinder liners. Furthermore, losses in the flow of oil and coolant were reduced, and frictional losses were reduced in air induction and charge air flows. This has resulted in a TDI line-up that offers uncompromisingly low fuel consumption and emission values without lacking even the slightest in comfort or dynamic performance.

The 77 kW / 105 PS (at 4,400 rpm) TDI accelerates the new Volkswagen Golf Variant to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds - with either a manual 5-speed gearbox or optional 7-speed DSG; in both cases its top speed is 190 km/h. Its exceptionally high maximum torque of 250 Newton-meters lies between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, which promotes a restrained, economical style of driving. Combined fuel consumption for the new engine aboard the VW Golf Variant TDI is an excellent low 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (119 g/km CO2). With a 7-speed DSG, these values are 4.8 litres and 125 g/km CO2. The 105-PS TDI can be ordered on any of the three equipment lines. And that is not all. It is also being offered with the optional BlueMotionTechnology package. In this case, the Volkswagen Golf Variant's low combined fuel consumption drops from 4.5 to 4.2 litres fuel (109 g/km CO2)

2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 PS

The 103 kW / 140 PS TDI is also exceptionally fuel efficient (may be ordered with Comfortline or Highline). Driven by this engine, the Volkswagen Golf Variant only needs 5.0 litres of diesel to cover a hundred kilometres (132 g/km CO2). If the Variant is ordered with a 6-speed DSG at this power level, combined fuel consumption is 5.5 litres (equivalent to 144 g/km CO2). In both cases, this contrasts with a top speed of 210 km/h and 9.7 seconds acceleration time for the classic sprint to 100 km/h.

In addition, the TDI shines at practically every engine speed with categorically high torque; it already delivers its maximum torque of 320 Newton-meter starting at 1,750 rpm and holds it constant up to 2,500 rpm.

Fuel induction in the large direct injection turbo-diesel engine is handled by the latest generation common rail system. Up to 1,800 bar injection pressure and special eight-hole injection nozzles deliver especially fine atomisation of the diesel fuel. The eight-hole injection nozzles are controlled by the latest generation of piezo in-line injectors. Electrically-controlled piezo crystals, assisted by a hydraulic element, inject fuel in fractions of a second. Compared to conventional solenoid valves, piezo technology enables more flexible injection processes with smaller and more precisely metered fuel volumes. The benefit: a very quiet and pleasantly smooth running engine, exceptional responsiveness and low fuel consumption and emissions. Also having a positive effect on acoustics is the completely maintenance-free toothed belt drive of the camshaft. Thanks to the conversion to common rail technology and numerous other acoustic measures such as a noise-damping film in the windscreen, both VW Golf Variant TDI versions are among the quietest diesel models in their class.


All TDI and TSI versions of the new Volkswagen Golf Variant are available with the optional Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). Depending on the torque of the engine, the Golf either gets a 6-speed or 7-speed DSG. The extremely efficient and agile DSG is completely supplanting the classic torque-converter automatic in the Golf.

Both DSG versions are characterised by maximum economy and dynamic shifting unlike that of any previous transmission. Besides their different numbers of forward gears, the two DSGs differ technically in their clutch type. While two dry clutches are used in the 7-speed DSG, the dual clutch of the 6-speed DSG runs wet in an oil bath. True of both transmissions: even the most experienced professional drivers cannot even approach the shifting speed of either DSG version. Another fact: more than any other automatic, the dual clutch transmissions have the potential to reduce fuel consumption and thereby emissions.

The two DSG variants are each specialists in their applications. While the 6-speed DSG shines when paired with torque-strong engines (up to 350 Newton-meter), the 7-speed DSG is especially effective in combination with smaller engines (up to 250 Newton-meter).


At its market launch, the successful Variant (more than 95,000 new vehicle registrations in 2008) will be offered in the three equipment versions Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The latter replaces the previous Sportline version as the top equipment line. Always standard in all versions are six airbags, the ESP electronic stabilisation program with counter steering assist and trailer stabilisation and climate control. Moreover, there are specific details that distinguish each version. The Volkswagen Golf Variant Comfortline, for example, has a standard folding backrest on the front passenger seat that folds completely forward to provide space for especially long objects. The Volkswagen Golf Variant Highline has details such as a panoramic sunroof and Alcantara sport seats that make up its special character.

Volkswagen Golf Variant Trendline

The lowest featured version even offers a considerable array of standard features. In Germany, the new model is distinguished from the previous model by additional standard features such as the multi-function display (trip computer), visible tailpipes (beginning at 105 PS), "Titan" decorative accents, daytime running lights integrated in the headlights, dual-tone horn, extended ESP that includes the comfort braking assistant, door handles and door mirror housings painted in body colour and the semi-automatic "Climatic" climate control system. Other standard features include electric window lifts (front and rear), RF remote central locking, a removable cargo area liner, cargo area lighting, various storage compartments including one in the roofliner, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and roof rails. The VW Golf Variant Trendline is delivered with size 205/55 R16 tyres as standard equipment.

Volkswagen Golf Variant Comfortline

The differentiating features are even more distinctive on the new Golf Comfortline. Above and beyond "Trendline" items, the additional features that now underscore the high-end character of this version include new 16-inch steel wheels with 5-spoke covers in alloy look, comfort seats and folding front passenger seat,, a chrome light switch, new decorative inserts ("Black Pyramid"), chrome trim strips on the side windows, chrome frames around the horizontal radiator louvers, parking distance control (Park Pilot) front and rear, carpet floor mats, leather for the new three-spoke steering wheel, leather gearshift knob and handbrake lever, new velour upholstery ("Scout") and the RCD 210 radio-CD system with MP3 function.

Volkswagen Golf Variant Highline

The "Highline" equipment line was discontinued on the previous fifth generation of the Golf, in which the Golf Sportline assumed the role of the top model. Exterior features distinguishing the new "Highline" version from the Volkswagen Golf Variant Trendline and Comfortline include: new 17-inch alloy wheels ("Porto") with size 225 tyres, chrome louvres on the radiator grille and air intake screen also in chrome, front fog lights with static curve lights, headlight washing system, heated windscreen washer nozzles and silver-anodised roof railings.

Inside, the Volkswagen Golf Variant Highline makes its appearance with features such as the extended multi-function "Plus" display unit, sport seats with centre panels in Alcantara ("Dropmag" style), decorative inserts in "Brushed Chrome", height adjustment for the front passenger seat, chrome bezels around the light switch, mirror adjustment switches and control keys for the window lifts, heated seats and climate control (Climatronic).

Moreover, there are numerous other features, some of them new, that are available as options on all versions of the new Volkswagen Golf Variant.

Radio and Radio-Navigation systems

Volkswagen is offering the new Volkswagen Golf Variant with three radio systems and two radio-navigation systems of the 210, 310 and 510 series. Hands-free telephone units can be added to any of the infotainment systems. Always standard equipment on cars with one of the radio and radio-navigation systems, starting with the 310 series, is an AUX-IN port for an external MP3 player. 310 and 510 series units also have an optional USB port (MEDIA-IN) and CD changer (for the navigation systems).

All radio and radio-navigation systems have a MP3-capable CD player. The radio systems carry the designations RCD 210, RCD 310 and RCD 510; their counterparts with an additional navigation system are the RNS 310 and RNS 510. A rearview camera integrated in the tailgate can also be interfaced to the RNS 310, RCD 510 and RNS 510 units. The RNS 510 utilises a 30 GB hard drive for navigation and entertainment.

The latest infotainment unit in the Volkswagen program is the RNS 310 radio-navigation system. Like the larger RNS 510 radio-navigation system and the RCD 510 radio system, it is also equipped with a user-friendly touch-screen. This colour screen measures five inches (400 x 240 pixels). Furthermore, the RNS is equipped with a SD card slot and a dual tuner. The SD card can be used to save navigational data (data copied from the navigation CD) as well as MP3 files for music reproduction.

Park Assist

The "Park Assist" parking assistance system being offered for the first time in the Volkswagen Golf Variant is an example of high-end technology. The system is capable of nearly automatic reverse parking in parallel parking spaces that are just 1.1 meter longer than the vehicle. The driver just needs to operate the gas pedal, brake and clutch; meanwhile, the Volkswagen Golf Variant steers into the pre-measured space, guided by sensors. Whenever the steering process is interrupted by manual steering, "Park Assist" is deactivated. The intuitively operated system is started by pressing a button located right in front of the gearshift knob.

While driving down the road at speeds up to 30 km/h and at a distance of 0.5 to 1.5 meters from other parked cars, ultrasonic sensors detect all parking spaces aligned with the roadway on either the left or right (depending on the turn signal direction that is set), and a control module computes the ideal parking path. "Park Assist" communicates the starting position to the driver via the multi-function display. Then the driver shifts into reverse gear.

Now appearing on the display is the message "Steering control active! Watch your surroundings!" The driver only needs to accelerate, apply the clutch and perform braking during the rest of the parking process; the steering is handled by the Volkswagen Golf Variant. As soon as the "Park Pilot" switches to a continuous signal at the rear, this indicates that the optimal distance to the next vehicle has been reached (approx. 20 centimetres). If the speed is excessive and/or the driver makes any sort of steering wheel movement, "Park Assist" is instantaneously deactivated. Generally, the entire parking process after shifting to reverse gear takes only 15 seconds.

Rearview camera

The new generation of the Volkswagen Golf Variant will also be available for the first time with a rearview camera, or what is known as "Rear Assist". As soon as the reverse gear is engaged, the camera integrated in the tailgate monitors the space behind the Volkswagen Golf Variant.

The system can be ordered in conjunction with the new touch-screen radio and radio-navigation systems RNS 310, RCD 510 and RNS 510. Camera images are transmitted to the touch-screen as real-time images. The path steered is also shown by orientation lines on the screen. Even the smallest of obstacles are easy to recognise with the rearview camera, and the tightest of parking spaces can be mastered with millimetre accuracy. "Rear Assist" also simplifies the process of hooking up trailers. The camera itself has a wide-angle lens. Horizontally, it acquires objects over an angular range of 130 degrees, and vertically over a range of 100 degrees.

Volkswagen Golf Variant Exclusive

Effective immediately, Volkswagen Individual is launching the new "Volkswagen Exclusive" product brand. In the future, it will market very exclusive models and special equipment for a wide variety of model series under this label. The first model to be offered in an Exclusive version will be the new Volkswagen Golf Variant, which will cross over from an everyday all-purpose vehicle to a lifestyle estate car. Elegant Highline features form the basis for the Volkswagen Golf Variant Exclusive. And here are the Exclusive ingredients:

The exterior will launch with such features as a sport chassis (15 millimetre lower ride height), 17-inch alloy wheels ("Sienna" in "Titan Silver") and new Volkswagen Exclusive logos. Contact to the road will be provided by sporty, wide profile 225/45 tyres. Making the transition to the interior are door tread plates that are also upgraded with the new logo.

The interior impresses with an extremely extensive array of special features. Along with Highline equipment such as automatic climate control ("Climatronic"), a panoramic sunroof and the "RCD 210" radio-CD system, the following additional features from the new Volkswagen Exclusive program are also offered: electric lumbar support, storage drawers under the front seats, leather steering wheel, leather gearshift knob and handbrake lever, carpet floor mats in front and rear with coloured piping and door trim in leather look. The sport seats in the leather combination "Nappa / Vienna" (heated seats in front), which are also standard, may be ordered in either the "Sioux / Titan Black" or "Cinnamon / Titan Black" colour combination. All leather interfaces are also provided with decorative colour seams. Never before has a Volkswagen Golf Variant made such an elegant appearance in the showroom.

2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R

The Volkswagen Scirocco R - conceptualized by Volkswagen Individual - is an impressive performance package with a brilliant engine and chassis, unique looks and exclusive features. Instead of the usual six-cylinder used so far in R-models of this segment, a boosted four-cylinder TSI is being used in the new VW Scirocco R. Its advantages: very high power and torque values with significantly reduced fuel consumption. On average, just 8.3 liters of super unleaded flows to the combustion chambers via direct injection per 100 kilometers of driving. That corresponds to CO2 emissions of 194 g/km - top values for a fast 250 km/h (electronically limited) sports car.

Volkswagen Scirocco fleet at the start in 24 hour race: Volkswagen plans to demonstrate once again at the 24 hour race just how much dynamic potential the Volkswagen Scirocco R possesses. An entire fleet of two-door cars, five cars altogether, will enter the marathon ride through the "Green Hell" there; all of them bear a close resemblance to the production vehicle, both technically and visually.

Gas in a literal sense: Three of the Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 versions are powered by a TSI gasoline engine with 315 PS. Two other VW Scirocco GT24 cars carry the additional CNG label, designating Compressed Natural Gas, because their TSI is fired with very cleanly combusting natural gas - an exception in car racing. The 300 PS Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG cars have extremely low emissions. After winning and putting its stamp on the Dakar Rally with the Race Touareg powered by a fuel-efficient TDI (direct-injection diesel), Volkswagen is now taking up the issue of sustainability in the Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 as well - and emphatically - on the race course.

VW Scirocco R - from car racing to the street: This is not the Scirocco's first race of this type. This Volkswagen was shaking up the racing field on such occasions as far back as the 1970s. And in 2008, professionals the likes of Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck rocketed two VW Scirocco GT24 cars to a dual victory in its class. In 2009, things will be even more exciting. Because for the first time, the event offers an opportunity to take a good look at the street version of the racing cars in the form of the new Volkswagen Scirocco R. The first production cars will be produced later this year; with a manual six-speed transmission or - as in the Volkswagen Scirocco race vehicles - with the optional DSG 6-speed dual clutch transmission. Always aboard as standard equipment on the front-wheel drive vehicle: the XDS electronic transverse differential lock on the front axle for attaining optimal traction performance; this system was introduced for the first time on the new Volkswagen Golf GTI.

R-Drive - sports car engine

About one year after the market launch of the third generation Volkswagen Scirocco and the dual victory on the Nürburgring track, the new R-version is going to the starting line as what is certainly the most powerful production VW Scirocco ever built. To attain the very high specific power in the 2.0 TSI (97.5 kW / 132.5 PS per liter displacement), Volkswagen decided on a turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine known internally as the EA113.

More dynamic performance by clever downsizing: Like all TSI engines, the R-version too combines the efficiency of direct injection with the power of engine boosting. Despite downsizing the engine displacement and number of cylinders, the 1,984 cm3 sixteen-valve, four-cylinder engine develops significantly more power (+ 15 PS) and torque (+ 30 Newton-meter) than the six-cylinder engine of the most recent Volkswagen Golf R32. Specifically, the 2.0-liter TSI in the new VW Scirocco R attains a maximum power of 265 PS at 6,000 rpm. Its maximum torque - a hefty 350 Newton-meter - is available over an immense range of engine speed: 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. This makes for agile responsiveness of the engine, which is able to spontaneously summon torque in the blink of an eye in practically any speed range. The engine's acoustic output impressively underscores its special kind of power development. The exhaust system itself is designed as a double-flow system. Oval chrome tailpipes extend out from the bumper, one on the left and one on the right.

Engine of the Year for the Volkswagen Scirocco R: The in-line four cylinder, which has already earned four "Engine of the Year" awards, builds up its powerful torque via a turbocharger (up to 1.2 bar boost pressure) with intercooling. The engine, weighing in at just 152 kilograms, is controlled by fully electronic engine management with E-gas. The four cylinder's pistons have bolts with higher strength compared to less powerful versions. The connecting rods were also designed to be stronger, to reliably transmit the engine's high torque to the crankshaft. Because of the hefty engine forces that are generated, the cylinder block itself was reinforced as well.

All of this has a highly dynamic effect: The lightweight 1,333 kilogram VW Scirocco R needs just 6.0 short seconds for the intermediate sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear. It is precisely this type of driving, with a sensation of the build up to maximum torque that is "felt" right from idling, that distinguishes this sports car. It is an impressive, cool cruiser for every route and day of the year. Yet, those who downshift and give the car full throttle awaken a second side of the Volkswagen Scirocco R: a wild beast that sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, that is not electronically limited until it reaches 250 km/h and 6,320 rpm, and that accomplishes the classic 1,000 meter sprint in 25.9 seconds.

It is a given that this VW Scirocco will also have an optional dual clutch transmission (DSG). Those who choose the innovative 6-speed DSG will experience an even faster sprinting Volkswagen Scirocco R: the 100 km/h mark drops down to 6.4 seconds here. As is so often the case with a DSG, gains in dynamic performance (and comfort) are by no means purchased at the expense of fuel efficiency or emissions. In fact, the opposite is true, as demonstrated by its 8.2 liter average fuel consumption and 192 g/km CO2.

R-Chassis - sports car tuning

Volkswagen will launch the front-wheel drive VW Scirocco R with a specially tuned sport chassis and XDS electronic transverse differential lock as standard equipment. The latter refers to a functional extension of the electronic differential lock (EDS) that is integrated in the ESP system and eliminates any type of traction loss.

XDS compensates for understeer: As soon as the intelligent electronics detects unloading of the front wheel at the inside of a curve in fast curve driving, the ESP hydraulics applies braking pressure at this specific wheel to restore optimal traction. So, XDS acts like a transverse differential lock that compensates for the typical understeer of front-wheel drive cars in fast curve driving. The driving behavior of the already agile Volkswagen Scirocco R is made significantly more precise and neutral thanks to XDS.

Chassis layout from production: In front, the Volkswagen Scirocco R has a McPherson suspension for precise tracking and balanced comfort properties. In the rear, it is a four-link suspension that convincingly meets the challenge of achieving chassis tuning that is sporty yet comfortable.

DCC optimally resolves dilemma between comfort and dynamics: As an option, the VW Scirocco R will also be available with DCC Dynamic Chassis Control. This system continually adjusts damping of individual wheels to roadway conditions based on signals from three body sensors and displacement sensors for each wheel. During acceleration, braking and steering processes, chassis damping is stiffened in fractions of a second to optimally meet vehicle dynamic requirements. By making these automatic adjustments, DCC significantly increases comfort in driving situations that are less challenging dynamically, resolving the conflict in goals between a stiff sporty tuning and a comfortable one. Besides the "Normal" DCC mode, the driver can also choose the "Sport" or "Comfort" mode.

New R-wheel styling: Standard equipment includes newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels ("Talladega" type) with size 235/40 tires. An optional 19-inch version of the same wheel type is also offered. Both wheel-tire combinations support the maximum attainable transverse dynamics of the new sports car.

17-inch braking system for maximum deceleration: The braking system was also modified to handle the VW Scirocco R's higher level of driving performance. That is why a 17-inch system is used, instead of a 16-inch system; all four brakes have ventilated disks and R-specific brake calipers painted in glossy black. In front, the disks have a diameter of 345 millimeters, and in the rear 310 millimeters. The electronic stabilization program (ESP) was also modified. A new Sport mode can be selected by pressing the ESP button. This makes the ESP respond later in very fast driving on roads with lots of curves - e.g. on a race course - for handling that is even more agile. The electro-mechanical power steering of the Volkswagen Scirocco R was also given a sportier tuning curve.

R-Design - sports car look

Visually, many aspects of the Volkswagen Scirocco R follow the lead of the GT24, the VW Scirocco designed for car racing.

Front end with LED daytime running lights: The front end design reflects the motto "form follows function"; it has three large air inlets with large louvers in the specially designed Volkswagen Scirocco R bumper that engineers designed for optimal cooling of the brakes and engine. Integrated to the right and left of the outboard air inlets are newly designed and standard LED daytime running lights. The narrow, unique radiator grille screen is styled in a high-end glossy black. Here (as on the tailgate) the strongest VW Scirocco of all times can be identified by a new R-logo design that it sports in chrome on a black background. Providing for perfect illumination of the roadway, meanwhile, are standard bi-xenon headlights with integrated turn signal lights.

Rear end with double-flow exhaust system: Compared to all other production Sciroccos, the rear image of this car is dominated by a considerably larger roof edge spoiler and a prominent glossy black diffuser in the lower area of the bumper that shows typical R-design styling. Both of these components - diffuser and roof edge spoiler - reduce aerodynamic lift at the rear axle. Stylistically, the oval chrome tailpipes of the double-flow exhaust system are harmoniously integrated into the overall design of the rear. One tailpipe on the left and the other on the right define the border between the black diffuser and the bumper painted in car color. In addition, the taillights of the new Volkswagen Scirocco R were given a smoked tint.

Side profile with new R-wheels: The side view is characterized by powerfully styled side skirts painted in car color as well as new "Talladega" style alloy R-wheels in 18-inch format. The milled, polished wheels sport five sets of three spokes that are as visually unique and striking as the wheels of the Golf GTI ("Denver") and offer a very attractive view of the large 17-inch braking system with its glossy black calipers and R-logo. As an option, Volkswagen is also offering a 19-inch version of the "Talladega" wheels (named after a US race course). Like the brake calipers, the outside mirrors of the VW Scirocco R are always painted a glossy black, independent of the car color.

The interior of the new VW Scirocco R presents an altogether refined appearance. Like all R-models, specific interior accents, sport seats (optionally in leather) and numerous other dynamic features are applied. And indeed as standard equipment. Details of features distinguishing the Volkswagen Scirocco R from other versions with up to 200 PS power:
Sport seat system with seat covers in "Kyalami" fabric weave (named after the Formula-1 race course in South Africa), with R-Logo on the front head restraints in "Art Grey". Inner surface of contoured seat side supports has crystal gray microfibers.

R-Extra features - sports car plus

All Sciroccos sport a very extensive list of features. Standard features on board include six airbags, ESP with countersteering assistance, electro-mechanical power steering, daytime running lights, semi-automatic climate control ("Climatic"), central locking with RF remote control and power windows, to name just a few details. On the VW Scirocco R, this list is lengthened to include the features already touched upon under "Interior". These extra functional features are included:
Bi-xenon headlights including static curve lighting, dynamic headlight leveling control, headlight cleaning system and warning lamp for low washer fluid level.
Automatic climate control ("Climatronic") with separate left and right controls, plus automatic recirculation switching.
"RCD 310" Radio-CD system (4 x 20 Watt) with eight loudspeakers, CD player, MP3 playback function with title display, dual tuner with phase diversity for best possible radio reception and AUX-IN multimedia socket in the center console.
Light and Sight package with two lights in the front footwells, automatic running light switching (including "Coming home" and "Leaving home" functions, automatically dimming rearview mirror and rain sensor.

2010 Volkswagen Polo

Visually speaking, the Volkswagen Polo was developed 1:1 from the principles of the new Volkswagen "Design DNA". The Scirocco, the first model with this pedigree, was sent to the races in 2008 to take pole position among the world's best cars. Today, this coupé retains its value more consistently than any other car in Germany. The second wave of the new DNA also debuted in 2008 in the new Volkswagen Golf and its high-roofed counterpart, the Volkswagen Golf Plus. These models have since regained number 1 rankings in the eyes of buyers, a fact born out in car registration statistics. Arriving now is the third model based on the new Volkswagen Design DNA - the Polo.

Close network of designers, development engineers and production experts

A precondition for implementing this design philosophy, which is characterized by the greatest precision and clarity, are progressive and highly innovative development and production methods. Designers, development engineers and production experts at Volkswagen work together in closer interaction than is otherwise usual. Their goal was to produce a level of quality, both technical and visual, that is generally only found in cars several classes higher. This alliance was implemented with great success over the past two years by a leadership team under the direction of Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn. On this team, experts such as Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann (Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Group; Production), Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg (Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand; Development) and Walter de Silva (Head of Group Design) combine their creative energies to design and produce cars like the new Volkswagen Polo.

Design and dimensions

Thanks to the new design DNA defined by Walter de Silva, the impression that this Volkswagen Polo makes - in contrast to many other cars in the so-called A0 or supermini class - is not contrived or 'cute'; instead it is mature.

New Volkswagen Polo shows the new Volkswagen family face

The VW Polo, with its distinctive new Volkswagen family face, is instead a purposeful and impressive car, which - measuring just 3,970 millimeters in length (+54 millimeters compared to previous model) and 1,682 millimeters wide (+32 millimeters) - offers space for up to five people and a lot of luggage (280 to 952 liters). The car's generous gain in width combined with a reduction in height (-13 to 1,453 millimeters) lends the Volkswagen Polo a more dynamic stance and purposeful appearance. The design itself is defined by sharp, precise lines without stylistic gimmicks that quickly fade in popularity; because in the long run, less is more - and the consistently high resale values of Volkswagens are longstanding proof of this claim.

Walter de Silva's creative touch in a style of "Semplicità"

This explains why Walter de Silva intentionally declared "La Semplicità" - "the simplicity" - as his credo here. "La Semplicità" in no way means a diminishment of features. The opposite is the case. Walter de Silva: "Elegance and emotionality, sportiness and dynamics, continue to guide design and styling. In pursuit of simplicity and clarity, one must carefully consider how to express the intentions of designers while speaking to those of the observer."

The starting point for all of these deliberations is the car's reflection on the Volkswagen brand, its history and its values. "Certain distinctive design elements", says de Silva, "have evolved as typical of the brand. Mastery of the architecture and a balance of proportions have formed the foundation, the emphasis on horizontal lines has evolved into a unifying characteristic across models, and a literal love for details has become an essential means of expression." Above all, there is a very high level of quality that can be clearly seen in the unmistakable precision of the car's lines and in the treatment of its surfaces. The new Volkswagen Polo reflects these design principles par excellence.

"The Polo," underscores de Silva, "displays self-assured proportions. As soon as you see the car, you are struck by its dynamic looks, while the design is clean and the overall appearance very purposeful. Reduced radii, tight seams and extremely sharp panel edges in its side profile, engine hood and tailgate underscore the car's logical design concept. Above all, the gain in width leads to a very full, powerful image from every perspective."

Front end

The Volkswagen family face that has been specially adapted to the VW Polo with its flat grille and band of headlights that has typified the brand ever since the Scirocco - emphasizes the car's additional width. Moreover, it conveys an image of the car's very low center of gravity. Harmoniously integrated in this face are the Volkswagen Polo's body-colored bumpers beneath the black grille.

In a third horizontal line below this, there is another large air inlet that supplies the engine and brakes with ample air. At its sides, this black band incorporates the daytime running lights and fog lights with integrated turn indicators. The daytime running lights save up to 0.15 liter of fuel per 100 kilometers compared to conventional continuous running lights. Just a few centimeters above the road, the narrow body-colored front spoiler catches the eye. This spoiler has been moved forward, and it makes a decisive contribution towards the car's exemplary pedestrian protection credentials.

Volkswagen offers the Polo with two different headlights, depending on selected options: the "Trendline" base version is fitted with H4 headlights. H7 dual headlights are installed starting with the "Comfortline". Also integrated in the headlights are the turn signal lights. In terms of styling, external and internal design features of the headlights with their different lighting elements combine with the lines of the radiator grille to form one unit.

Rear end

The rear of the car is characterized by geometric order and sportiness. The design cue from the headlights, with their line breaking off with an upward turn, is taken up again in the taillights. They also display a very distinctive night look and extend into the Volkswagen Polo's broad shoulder. Supported on these shoulders - in the area of the car's lateral "character line" that can be seen from every perspective - is the roof section. Meanwhile, the tailgate extends right down to the bumper. Just as on the Volkswagen Golf, the Polo's tailgate is opened with the VW logo, which swivels up and functions as a handle. Standard equipment: a roof edge spoiler integrated in the tailgate.

The car's image is also exceptionally powerful from the rear. From this angle, one can clearly see how designers exploited the increased track width (+29 millimeters in front and +30 in rear) and stretched the outer wheels along a vertical plane right up to the wheel wells as though carved out with a knife. That is also why the Volkswagen Polo can easily accommodate very large wheel-tire combinations. The range of optional tire sizes extends all the way to 215/40 R17.

Side profile

The lateral profile line is, among other things, dominated by the distinctively sporty front overhang and extremely short rear overhang, the clearly modeled "character line" and low roof that slopes towards the rear. The prominent shoulder line also gives the vehicle a new lateral structure and emphasizes its generally masculine appearance. Since the fourth generation, the five-door VW Polo has also sported what is known as a "three window look". This refers to the third side window integrated in the C pillar. This design feature is especially prominent on the new Volkswagen Polo. In the area of the A and C pillars, the lower window line also takes an upward sweep, a reference to the styling of the headlights and taillights. Also striking are the pronounced side skirts, whose shape offers aerodynamic benefits. The VW Polo's underbody is optimized for optimal airflow. Also enhancing aerodynamic performance are the redesigned outside mirror housings, whose air resistance has been reduced by 20 percent compared to the previous model.

Quality and passive safety

High body quality and passive safety are very "perceptible" aboard a car, especially in the rigidity of the car body. This is quite evident on the new Volkswagen Polo, because the Volkswagen offers an excellent value of static torsional rigidity at 180,000 Nm/° . The reason: a car body's static rigidity is a key technical property and an important and relevant parameter in evaluating subjective parameters such as safety, quality, and of course driving comfort. The high static rigidity of the new VW Polo is attained, among other things, by high-strength and very high-strength steels and the right structural design for loading and reinforcement of body nodal points.

This is clearly illustrated at the rear of the Volkswagen Polo: Here too there are very rigid nodal components with envelope-type profile construction, which extend quite far into the contact area of the tailgate hinges. In addition, adhesive joints are used. This construction method optimizes the approach of using a nodal system for rigidity and produces a homogeneous distribution of rigidity in upper body sections. Similar examples of profile-intensive lightweight envelope construction can be found throughout the Volkswagen Polo's body structure.

Greater stability despite reduced weight

Static rigidity was certainly not attained at the cost of added weight. The opposite is true: The car has an excellent lightweight construction factor of 3.6. The lower this factor, the more efficient the implementation of body structure in terms of lightness and rigidity. The new VW Polo is therefore a perfect example of highly innovative lightweight construction. The fact that the body of this Volkswagen is 7.5 percent lighter than that of the previous model, despite its safety gains, illustrates this impressively.

Top values for dynamic rigidity too

High dynamic rigidity is an essential factor in attaining excellent vehicle dynamics, vibration comfort and ideally balanced acoustics. On the new Volkswagen Polo, the combination of an optimal structural layout of the car body, clever material selection and innovative welding and gluing processes result in top values of 43 Hz for the so-called torsional natural frequency and 46 Hz for the bending natural frequency. In all relevant body zones, high local rigidity values also provide for good sound insulation and therefore for an exceptionally low interior noise level.

Crash behavior

Among its goals, the VW Polo was specifically designed to attain the new, stricter and more comprehensive, 5-star EuroNCAP rating. The higher structural rigidity of the Polo's bodyshell contributes to these results. In the footwell area alone, intrusion - related to the car body's resistance to deformation in a frontal crash - was lowered by 50 percent! In the case of a side impact, the intrusion value was reduced by 20 percent. Specific actions taken to protect occupants in a frontal, side or rear crash:

Frontal crash

In a frontal crash - such as an offset crash between two vehicles (with half vehicle overlap of both vehicles) that commonly occurs - the very rigid occupant cell creates a survival space for the driver and passenger. In front, an extremely rigid bumper crossmember was specially designed for an offset crash, in that it takes the impact energy and distributes it to the side of the vehicle not directly affected by the impact too. As a result, both side frame members can now absorb the energy together. The side frames were optimized to achieve a deceleration curve in a frontal crash that significantly reduces on occupant loads.

Moreover, the lower crossmember in the footwell area is designed as a form strengthened component. First, this has reduced its weight by half, and second, it attains very high strength. As previously noted, this has reduced intrusions in the footwell area by up to 50 percent compared to the previous model. In turn, this reduces biomechanical loads to the feet and lower legs enormously. The pedals in the Volkswagen Polo offer passive protection; ideally they prevent injuries in a crash by freeing up space for the feet and lower legs.

The side body section, designed as a type of ring structure - together with the door framed within it - provides for additional form stability, even in frontal accidents with very little overlap. In what are known as load paths, extremely strong, partially form-strengthened sheet metal reinforcements are used here too - in the A-pillar, the similarly braced door rail extending to the B-pillar, the roof frame and the side sills.

Side impact

The VW Polo development team assigned special priority to effective side impact protection, since the crush zone in the area of the doors is of course quite small. When the new Volkswagen Polo collides with an object on its side, the energy is channeled via the special form-strengthened B-pillar and profiled impact beams arranged diagonally in the door. Compared to the previous model, the seat crossmember and side sills were significantly reinforced. In this way, both the speed of the intruding object, or colliding vehicle in the crash as well as the intrusion itself, are reduced by 20 percent in a side impact, as already mentioned.

Very critical, as a rule, are accidents in which the car collides with a tree from the side. This case is simulated in crash tests by a so-called pole impact. The Volkswagen Polo body offers an extremely high level of safety in this crash type, thanks to a hot-formed and therefore very stable roof frame and rigid side sills. Compared to the previous model, intrusion has also been reduced considerably here. And indeed by 15 percent.

Rear impact

The rear area of the new VW Polo was reinforced by especially strong side frames. The fuel system is also given a protective enclosure. In tandem with the very stable occupant cell described, the Volkswagen fulfills the highest requirements in a crash involving collision to the rear body section as well.

Pedestrian safety

Along with the focus on protecting occupants on board the Volkswagen Polo, high priority was also given to the safety of other traffic participants. In a relatively compact car like the VW Polo, partner safety primarily refers to pedestrian safety. Requirements related to pedestrian safety were integrated early in the design phase of development work.

In the front hood area, interior sheet metal was designed to provide maximum deformation space to prevent punching through onto the hard area of the engine block. The hinges of the engine hood were also optimized for pedestrian safety. The fenders have separate deformation elements as well. In addition, the bumpers were of course integrated into this concept to guarantee the best possible protection of pedestrians.

Restraint systems

The new Volkswagen Polo has a highly effective network of airbags as standard equipment, including combined head-thorax airbags (integrated in the front seatbacks), belt tensioners and seatbelt limiters plus seatbelt warning indicator, head restraints that counteract whiplash (both front restraints), three rear head restraints and Isofix mounting preparation for suitable child seats. On the active side, the standard electronic stabilization program (ESP) completes the safety system.

The safest VW Polo of all times

The sum result of all of these actions is effective. The body provides an exceptionally good foundation for attaining very low crash loading of the people on board, based on the car's optimized crash deceleration, low level of intrusions and the safety cell that is created. The restraint systems individually tuned to the Volkswagen Polo also make a contribution toward reducing injury risk as much as possible. And so this Volkswagen is advancing to become one of the world's safest cars in its class.

Greater stability for lower insurance costs

The body of the VW Polo - thought through to the last detail - has a direct effect on insurance costs. Because they are conspicuously low. The reason: Even minor parking lot collisions can result in significant damages. To minimize them, the front bumper system consists of a highly stable crossmember and - this is also crucial - integrated softer deformation elements. By targeted reinforcement measures in the area of the system of lower side frames, it was possible to increase the force level in the side frame by 25 percent (!) compared to the previous model.

This energy can be readily absorbed by the easy-to-replace bumper system, and more expensive subassemblies such as the radiator and climate control components are protected by the side frames. The resulting damage is much less in the case of a parking lot accident. And this alleviates repair costs and has a positive effect on insurance classifications: In Germany, the Volkswagen Polo base model was rated for liability class 16, part comprehensive class 15 and comprehensive class 13. This means that the new Volkswagen attains the best ratings in its vehicle class.


All Volkswagens are known for their intuitive user controls and excellent ergonomic properties - regardless of the proportions of their driver and passengers. These are clearly properties of the new Polo too. The entire interior was redesigned. Starting with the "Comfortline", the surface of the instrument panel is upgraded by so-called slush technology (a high-end surface structure that is soft to the touch). The lower cabin section as well as door inserts and interior trim panels may be ordered in either "Anthracite" or "Seashell".

Driver-oriented ergonomics

Noteworthy here is the center console that is now turned more toward the driver for convenience. The controls on this console are laid out as on the previous model, but they have been completely redesigned. At the very top there are two central air vents, which have high-end bezels in aluminum look from the "Comfortline" up ("Trendline": high-gloss black). On the console level below this, VW Polo drivers will find a familiar row of switches with details like the hazard lights switch, which is readily accessible and visible, and push buttons for the heated rear window and optional heated seats. The next level down contains controls for the new radio and radio-navigation systems that are all being introduced on the Volkswagen Polo for the first time. Top of the line equipment here is the RNS 310 - a radio-navigation system with touchscreen, multimedia interface (MEDIA-IN), MP3 functionality (via CD, DVD or SD card) and AUX-IN socket on its front panel. The RNS 310 may also be upgraded to include a hands-free telephone unit.

Finally, the lowermost console level is home to the completely redesigned user controls for the ventilation or climate control system ("Climatic" is standard equipment starting on the Comfortline). A practical feature here is optional cooling of the glove box. Also integrated here: a sunglasses compartment, deactivation switch for the front passenger's airbag and - if included as options - switches for the tire monitoring indicator (air pressure monitoring) and an MP3 port. The vehicle service book is stored in a space-saving storage slot at the base of the glove box.

White instrument backlighting

The instruments of the Volkswagen Polo were also redesigned; they now have white backlighting and are styled like those on the Golf. The fuel gauge is digital in the new generation Polo. Like the bezels for the air vents, the rotary light switch - still located on the left - gets a high-end metallic look from the "Comfortline" up.

Similar to other new models of the Volkswagen brand, new three-spoke steering wheels were developed for the VW Polo. The top version sports a leather steering wheel that is somewhat more compact than on the Golf. An optional multifunctional leather steering wheel (with user controls in the left spoke) will be offered too. Making a decidedly ergonomic impression are the armrests in the door trim panels (with storage bin for a 1.5 liter bottle) and a front center armrest (folding with storage compartment) that can now be ordered on the Volkswagen Polo for the first time.

More space at all seating positions

The driver's seat, front passenger's seat and rear bench seat were all redesigned. More space is now offered at all five seating locations in the Volkswagen Polo. In particular, knee room in the rear has grown with an increase in the interior length to 1,674 millimeters (+8 millimeters). Shoulder room in front (1,372 millimeters) has also increased by 22 millimeters. Thanks to these new dimensions, the new Polo offers a considerably more spacious interior ambiance. The VW Polo also proves to be very versatile: Folding the rear bench seat (with standard 60:40 split starting on the "Comfortline") is very simple; the car then offers a level cargo surface with the dual cargo floor that is standard equipment from the "Comfortline" up. The dual cargo floor can be mounted at two different heights.

Engines and transmissions

Seven engines will be offered on the new Volkswagen Polo during its first year of production - four gasoline and three diesels. Five of these engines are either brand new or new to the VW Polo; three of them can be paired with the innovative 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG) as an option instead of the manual 5-speed or 6-speed transmission. All engines satisfy limits of the new Euro-5 emissions standard.

The gasoline engines, two three-cylinder and two four-cylinder engines, sport a power range extending from 44 kW / 60 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS. New to the lineup are the two most powerful gasoline engines, the 1.4 liter with 63 kW / 85 PS and the 1.2 TSI with the noted 105 PS that is shifted by a standard 6-speed transmission.

Also new to the Volkswagen Polo are all three common rail turbo-diesels. These high-torque four-cylinder engines produce between 55 kW / 75 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS. A BlueMotion Technology version based on the mid-range power level of 66 kW / 90 PS will also debut in 2009; this Polo will consume just 3.6 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers and emit only 96 g/km CO2.

1.2 MPI with 44 kW / 60 PS and 51 kW / 70 PS

Entry into the world of VW Polo engines is offered by two proven three-cylinder engines with 60 PS or optional 70 PS and a multi point injection (MPI) engine. The 1.2-liter engines were further perfected in terms of weight, acoustics and attainment of the Euro-5 emissions standard for use in the new generation of the Polo. One example of a technical modification exhibited by the agile and economical three-cylinders is an optimized reduced-noise chain for the timing and oil pump drives. Engine management was also reconfigured. Technical modifications made in the engine area and body-related improvements have resulted in fuel consumption savings of an average of 0.3 liters per 100 kilometers relative to comparable versions of the previous model. CO2 emissions were similarly reduced from 138 to 128 g/km.

Both 1.2-liter engines aboard the Volkswagen Polo, each with four valves per cylinder, consume 5.5 liters of super or normal gasoline in combined mode. This contrasts with a respectable top speed of 157 km/h and 16.1 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h for the lightweight 1067 kilogram 60-PS version. The 70-PS version reaches a top speed of 165 km/h and can sprint to 100 km/h in 14.1 seconds if necessary.

The 60-PS 1.2 MPI engine delivers its maximum power at 5,200 rpm; its maximum torque of 108 Newton-meter is available at 3,000 rpm. The Polo with 70 PS develops its maximum power at 5,400 rpm; its 112 Newton-meter maximum torque is available at an identical 3,000 rpm. While the 60-PS engine is paired with the base "Trendline" version, the 70-PS engine may also be ordered as an option on the higher "Comfortline" equipment line.

1.4 MPI with 63 kW / 85 PS

The most powerful gasoline engine in the Volkswagen Polo lineup at the time of market launch is the 1.4 MPI that is equipped with new engine electronics and a new injection system as well. The four-cylinder aluminum block engine outputs 85 PS (at 5,000 rpm). Its maximum torque of 132 Newton-meter is available at 3,800 rpm. For the first time on a VW Polo, this engine will be available with an optional 7-speed dual clutch transmission over the mid-term.

Besides offering good comfort and dynamic performance, the just 95 kilogram heavy - or rather light - engine is distinguished above all by its excellent economy. The Volkswagen Polo 1.4 MPI, when paired with standard 5-speed transmission, consumes 5.9 liters fuel per 100 kilometers on average. This puts its CO2 value at 139 g/km. With this engine too, it was possible to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions compared to the previous model. And indeed by 0.4 liter and 11 g/km CO2. As on the three-cylinder engines, the three-way catalytic converter of the four-cylinder is equipped with an optimized noble metal coating with the goal of impressively fulfilling Euro-5 emissions limits.

When it comes to dynamic performance, the Volkswagen Polo 1.4 MPI scores points with a top speed of 177 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 12.1 seconds. In this case, the engine's elasticity is also very good: in fifth gear this Polo accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in just 18 seconds. The 1.4-liter engine can be ordered with either the "Comfortline" or "Highline" version.

1.2 TSI with 77 kW / 105 PS

A new Volkswagen highlight in drive technology is the 1.2 TSI of the VW Polo. It is debuting sometime this year. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine was completely redeveloped, and it follows the downsizing philosophy of the internationally successful 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TSI. This expresses itself as maximum power with minimal fuel consumption. The latest TSI is characterized by sensational performance data. For example, the 105 PS Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h after just 9.7 seconds and can move at 190 km/h if necessary. This contrasts with fuel consumption and emissions values on the level of the already very good 60-PS base version: 5.5 liter consumption and 129 g/km CO2. Compared to the retired 1.6-liter engine of the previous model, average fuel consumption was lowered by 1.2 liter (!). This corresponds to a 30 g/km reduction in CO2 emissions.

The 1.2 TSI reaches its peak power at 5,000 rpm. The maximum torque of 175 Newton-meter - from 1.2 liters of displacement - is available between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. The Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI is delivered with a standard 6-speed manual transmission. As an option, this engine may also be paired with the 7-speed DSG developed by Volkswagen. Plans call for offering the TSI together with the "Comfortline" and "Highline" equipment lines.

1.6 TDI with 55 kW / 75 PS, 66 kW / 90 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS

The common rail diesels of the fifth generation VW Polo are entirely new developments. They output 75 PS, 90 PS and 105 PS. A version of the 90-PS TDI with BlueMotion package is also being offered; it consumes just 3.6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. All Volkswagen Polo TDIs come with a standard diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Like the 2.0-liter TDIs with common rail direct injection, the 1.6-liter four-cylinder, 16-valve engines exhibit ideal acoustic properties, a high level of agility and - a crucial factor here - extremely low fuel consumption and emissions. Of course, all variants of the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDI fulfill limits of the new Euro-5 emissions standard.

Technically, the 1,598 cm3 displacement TDI in this segment sets the highest standard on the market. Using a common rail system, the diesel fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber at a pressure of 1,600 bar. Piezo actuators control multiple injections with highly precise fuel quantities and timing.

In an effort to reduce internal engine friction, crankshaft, valve and oil pump drives were optimized. A square stroke/bore ratio minimizes friction losses at the cylinder liners. Furthermore, flow energy losses were reduced in oil and coolant loops as well as air induction and charge air flows. This has resulted in a lineup of TDI engines that offers uncompromisingly low fuel consumption and emissions without lacking in comfort or dynamic performance in the least.

1.6 TDI with 55 kW / 75 PS

The 75-PS version already outputs a maximum torque of 195 Newton-meter between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm. Fuel consumption: 4.2 liters. CO2 emissions: 109 g/km. Its maximum power is output at 4,000 rpm. In this version, the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDI can move at 170 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in 13.9 seconds. When shifted by the standard 5-speed transmission, the car takes exactly 18.0 seconds for the elastic sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in top gear.

1.6 TDI with 66 kW / 90 PS

Those wishing to reduce costs of ownership, fuel consumption and emissions even further will want to order the new Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDI with the BlueMotion package. Here the car's power is 90 PS, and thanks to the innovative array of Volkswagen fuel-saving measures - including an automatic start-stop system - fuel consumption is just 3.6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. And that corresponds to a CO2 value of just 96 g/km. In the standard version without BlueMotion package the 90-PS TDI consumes 4.2 liters. The 90-PS TDI engines provide their maximum torque of 230 Newton-meter between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm.

1.6 TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS

The most dynamic engine, the 105-PS version, goes to work with 250 Newton-meters of torque (1,500 to 2,500 rpm). It accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 189 km/h. Average fuel consumption: 4.2 liters diesel per 100 kilometers. Economizing with the Volkswagen Polo is fun too.

7-speed DSG

The new Polos are delivered with standard, precise-shifting and well staged 5-speed transmissions. In the case of the 1.2 TSI, a 6-speed transmission is also used. The 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG) on the VW Polo delivers a new maximum of efficiency, dynamic response and comfort. It is offered as an option on the 1.4 MPI with 85 PS, 1.6 TDI with 90 PS and 1.2 TSI with 105 PS. The transmission can be individually tuned for the use of different engines by calibrating various individual parameters, characteristic curves and maps.

Layout and operation of the 7-speed-DSG

The world's first 7-speed DSG for large-scale production has - as its most prominent design characteristics - two dry clutches whose pressure is regulated hydraulically. Engine power is transmitted to the dual clutch via the crankshaft and a dual-mass flywheel. Clutch I handles the odd-numbered gears, and clutch II the even gears plus reverse gear. The results of this sophisticated clutch management: when shifting, there are no gaps in propulsive power. Comfort and convenience are excellent, and the driver experiences an incomparably dynamic yet comfortable shifting feeling.

Responsible for this - along with an intelligent mechatronic system (electro-hydraulic transmission control) - are two clutches as well as two drive shafts and three final drive shafts. This networked system makes it possible to continually "lie in wait", ready to go into action at the next higher driving level. And indeed it is lightning-fast. Example: while the Volkswagen Polo is driven in sixth gear, the seventh gear is already engaged, but is not yet "active". As soon as the ideal shifting point has been reached, the clutch responsible for sixth gear automatically opens, while the other one closes and "pre-activates" seventh gear. This produces an overlap between opening and closing of the two clutches, and this leads to the comfortable shifting described above. The entire shifting process is completed within a few hundredths of a second, which is much faster than even the most highly trained professional driver could achieve.


Volkswagen has redesigned many aspects of the Polo's chassis with its McPherson front suspension and semi-independent rear suspension. For example, its track width was increased by 29 millimeters in front and 30 in the rear (new dimensions: 1,464 mm front, 1,456 mm rear). This has resulted in improved vehicle dynamics. Comfort was enhanced in parallel.

Improved directional stability

In front, Volkswagen has integrated a completely redesigned McPherson strut type suspension in the VW Polo. The front wheels were moved five millimeters forward to achieve a greater caster angle, and this offers greater directional stability. Furthermore, new strut bushes are used on the Volkswagen Polo; on the one hand they are lighter, and they also improve ride comfort. Larger wheels can now be used as well, and this further improves comfort. At the same time, these wheels have a positive effect on driving performance.

ESP enhances safety as standard equipment

The Volkswagen Polo is being sold in Germany and in many other countries with electronic stabilization program (ESP), including hill hold control, anti-lock braking system (ABS), braking assistant, anti-slip regulation (ASR), electronic limited-slip differential (EDS) and engine braking control (MSR) as standard equipment. Overall braking system performance was modified for the new generation VW Polo; among other elements, the 8.5 inch brake booster is being replaced by a higher performance 10 inch system.

With an eye toward attaining the goal of a five star rating in the EuroNCAP crash test, the steering column - with its continuously variable height and reach adjustment - was completely redeveloped. This redesign led to reduced weight. The standard electro-hydraulic power steering system was taken from the previous model and adapted to the new front suspension kinematics. Engineers developed entirely new tuning of the steering system. Steering feel and responsiveness as well as the center point - which defines steering feel in the straight-line tracking position - now set new standards.


Compared to the previous model, Volkswagen has rearranged the line structure of its equipment lines: "Trendline" still represents the entry-level variant, and "Comfortline" still refers to the mid equipment level. New to the lineup - and bringing the Volkswagen Polo in line with the Golf here - is the top version called "Highline".

Volkswagen Polo Trendline

The VW Polo Trendline already sports an interior with features that include a number of accents in an elegant high-gloss black. In addition, the Polo Trendline offers extensive safety and convenience features. Take active safety, for example: besides ABS, in 85 percent of all countries in the European Union - among other countries - standard on-board features also include the electronic stabilization program (ESP) including hill hold control.

And passive safety: In addition to front airbags and combined head/thorax airbags (front passenger airbag can be deactivated), the Polo also offers five head restraints, five three-point harnesses (height-adjustable in front), belt tensioners and belt force limiters in front, and Isofix-compatible child seat preparation (at the outer seating positions on the rear bench seat). The front head restraints were also designed to counteract the risk of whiplash injury.

Consider these convenience features: Standard equipment includes electro-hydraulic power steering, power windows in front, central locking, cargo area lighting and tie-down points, warning buzzer if lights are left on, height adjustment for driver's seat, illuminated make-up mirrors in the sun visors and green tinted windows. Meanwhile, "Titanium black" trim and "Metric" fabric give the interior a perceptibly high-end ambiance.

Volkswagen Polo Comfortline

Outward identifying characteristics of the VW Polo Comfortline include body-colored outside mirror housings and door handles, H7 dual headlights, daytime running lights and 15-inch wheels with special full wheel covers. On the convenience side, the range of standard equipment is complemented by such features as semi-automatic climate control (Climatic), electrically-adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, additional height adjustment on front passenger's seat, storage drawers under the front seats, various accents in aluminum look (instruments, air vents, rotary light switch, radio and climate system controls), asymmetrical split and folding rear bench seat and seatbacks, dual cargo floor, storage pockets on front seatbacks and remote control central locking.
